Just saw this advert for Johnnie Walker starring Robert Carlyle. It is claimed by the production company it was filmed in one take with no edit. What do yo think?

I have read a lot of blogs that discuss marketing your brand. One of the key things suggested is that you have an elevator pitch for your product, service or business. An elevator pitch is a brief summary of your products key selling points. By brief, we mean the time it takes to ride an elevator in your office building.

The key to the pitch, apparently, is to say as much as you can about your product that will make the person listening want to hear more. Usually that person is someone you are trying to sell to or trying to get more funding from.

Another view of the elevator pitch I have been thinking about is what to say when someone asks “What do you do for work?” When I worked for an employer, it was really simple to answer that question. I would just say who worked for, and that was generally enough to satisfy them.

Since I started freelancing, when friends and associates asked me what I was doing these days, I sort of fumbled my way through the answer. The problem was I had not really given much thought to answering the question properly. I also found that the work I do is not unique. I’m not saying I’m not good at my job, but I’m just not the only one doing this work. So I realised I’m not in a niche market. If you read any blogs about starting a blog, one the first things they recommend is to identify a niche market and corner that market.

So, here is my answer to the question “What do you do for work?” –

“I am a freelance consultant specialising in helping small businesses make the most of their network, e-mail and website. I am able to slot in at any stage of a project or I can manage the whole project for you if that is preferred.”

How would you answer the question “What do you do for work?”

Here is an interesting item from the BBC.

It is estimated here that there are 17 million people in the UK who are currently not online. So the aim is to have them online by the year 2012 in time for the Olympics.

By this time in the 21st century, if a person is not online, the question I would ask is, do they want to be?

I have put together some of the links I have found interesting this month:

Howsthe.com - website monitoring
New Office on the web

Take a mini break
Five tasks in the morning

This is the first in what will hopefully be a regular series of link posts. These are some sites I've seen recently that look rather interesting. I may be using some of them myself in the weeks and months to come

Transferr - Customised homepage
43Marks - Ultimate homepage
Adcherry - Make a free banner
Break.com - Funny videos and free TV shows
Instantcal - Put a calendar on your site
Curculator - Currency convertor and calculator

Downloaded and installed Internet Explorer 8 on my Vista laptop the other day and I discovered an annoying little problem.

It first appeared when I was using Google reader and tried to click through a link in an rss article I was reading. Nothing happened I tried using the context menu to open the link in a new tab and a new window with no success. Links on other pages tended to work ok. I tried looking at the IE8 settings, thinking there was some wierd setting that was set but I was unable to click on the link successfully.  This was becoming an annoying little problem as use Google Reader a lot.

After a bit of digging around I found the solution to my problem. I needed to register a couple of DLL files.

In a command prompt I typed the following commands:

regsvr32 urlmon.dll
regsvr32 actxproxy.dll

After rebooting the laptop everything started working ok.

With the imminent release of Windows 7 this year, you need to check if your PC is compatible or the not. The Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor will help you determine if you can upgrade your PC or not.

My own preference, and one I always recommeng to clients, is to always do a clean install of a new version of Windows. An OS upgrade will quite often cause more problems. If like me, you install different applications, there can always be some piece of code that will cause an issue.

In the past, I have tried Windows upgrades but I always end up having problems, whereas I never have the same number of issues with a clean install.

The UK government are conducting a consultation with communication firms including service providers and mobile phone firms. The consultation is considering asking all communications companies to log all Internet usage, e-mail and phone calls. Plan to monitor Internet use.

An interesting point is that they have scrapped plans for a single giant government-run database. This raises some interesting questions.

Where will these details be recorded?
Who will have access to this information - Government or Business?

Found this amusing item on the BBC site about rubber bands

Some of my clients are quite surprised at how little traffic they get to their site, especially brand new sites.

Of course, one of the first things you need to do is get the site indexed. Daniel Scocco at dailyblogtips.com posted a good article on how to get a domain indexed. It can be used as the first step in getting traffic to your site.
